I am a plant ecologist. Since approximately 2010 I am trying to apply Ecological tools and concepts to gain knowledge on how crop evolution has proceeded. I am lucky on this, because Ecology, in comparison with Genetics, Archaeology and other disciplines, has participated comparatively little to the domestication literature. But Ecology has certainly lots to contribute to the understanding of domestication processes and the mode and consequences of plant evolution under cultivation.
Why? read this, or this, or this, or that, for a start.
We are testing whether predictions of trait-based Ecology help to explain phenotypic differences between crops and their recognized wild progenitors, and whether domestication has impacted on the ecosystem services delivered by crops. Some results on that line, and on others, are in several of the links below. Funding for this research comes from regional (Madrid), national (Spanish government), and European agencies. Also, you can see photos of our experiments in the pictures button of the navigation toolbar.
